Connect an AI assistant (MCP)

With the AI connection, you can control Formtastic directly from your AI assistant, for example ChatGPT or Claude. Just write what you need: a new template, a completed form or a report on your documents. Formtastic takes care of the rest.

The connection uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard for connecting AI assistants to other software. It is included in every plan.

What you need

An AI assistant that supports MCP: ChatGPT, Claude or another tool such as Codex or Cursor.

Your MCP address: You will find it in the Formtastic web app in your account under AI assistants. Use the address exactly as shown there, including /mcp at the end.

Your Formtastic login: You sign in once in your browser when connecting.

Connect ChatGPT

In ChatGPT, open Plugins, choose + and create a custom MCP server.
Enter a name (e.g. “Formtastic”), paste your MCP address and choose OAuth as the authentication method.
Follow the steps. When ChatGPT asks you to connect your account, sign in on the Formtastic page that opens and confirm the access.
Install the plugin you created, start a new conversation and select it with @ in the message field.

If the option to add your own MCP server is missing, check the permissions of your ChatGPT account or workspace. The official OpenAI guide describes the current process.

Connect Claude

In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
Enter a name and your MCP address and use OAuth.
Sign in on the Formtastic page that opens and confirm the access.

In business accounts, your organization may need to add the connector first.

Other AI tools (e.g. Codex, Cursor)

Under AI assistants in your Formtastic account, you will find ready-made setup commands and configuration entries for Codex and Cursor to copy or download. For other tools, use the MCP address with your tool’s settings for “Streamable HTTP” and OAuth.

If your tool does not support OAuth, there are two alternatives in the advanced options:

Agent key: You create a key and enter it in your tool as a bearer token. The key is shown only once. If you lose it, revoke it and create a new one.

Redeem link: You generate a one-time link and pass it to your tool. The tool uses it to create its own key. The link works only once and expires quickly.

Set access permissions

Read only: The AI can view and search templates and documents, for example for reports. It cannot create, change or submit anything.

Read & write: The AI can also design templates and fill in and submit forms. It creates new templates as drafts that you review before publishing.

Every connection acts as your Formtastic user within your company. Your role, template permissions and plan limits still apply.

Check that it works

Ask your AI assistant to call the whoami tool, or simply ask: “Which Formtastic account are you connected to?” If the connection works, it will name your user and your company. Check that both match the account you want.

Then you can get started, for example with: “Create a heating maintenance checklist with photos and a signature.”

Disconnect

Under AI assistants in your Formtastic account, you can see all connections. Disconnect OAuth connections under Connected agents and revoke keys under Agent keys. Access ends immediately.

Privacy and security

Nothing changes about how your data is stored: it stays GDPR-compliant on our servers in Germany. However, whatever your AI assistant retrieves through the connection is also processed by its provider. Which AI assistant you connect is your decision and your responsibility.

You always sign in in your browser. Never enter your Formtastic password in a conversation with the AI assistant.

Troubleshooting

The connection fails: Check that you used the full MCP address including /mcp.
Access expired or revoked: Reconnect your account in the AI assistant. For older connections, disconnect the old one under Connected agents and connect again.
The AI is not allowed to change something: Reconnect and allow Read & write. Your Formtastic role and template permissions must also allow the action.
New features are missing in ChatGPT: Refresh the connection in ChatGPT and start a new conversation.
Agent key is rejected: Check that the key was pasted without extra spaces and is still active under Agent keys.
